At Ecologi, we’re moving away from the term “offsetting.” It’s often used to describe calculating emissions and funding equivalent carbon reductions or removal and leads to incorrect claims that impact has been fully neutralised. That framing not only risks accusations of greenwash but also overlooking the most important step: reducing emissions. That’s why we prefer an approach that emphasises the importance of all 3 steps in the process; measure the impact, do what you can to reduce it and fund action that removes emissions elsewhere.
