From a bicycle jaunt, to a tour of climate change, to major eco-fundraising.

Phil Sturgeon is technical architect by trade, and has recently become a tree fundraising machine. Working with Ecologi he’s funded the planting of over 60,000 mangrove trees.
At the start of 2019 everything was going wrong. I was working a job I hated in New York, trapped there by my visa, concerned about moving home to a very divided UK. Eventually, I built up the courage to quit the job, sold everything I owned, gave my turtle to a friend, and jumped on a flight to the Canary Islands to live a hermit life of cycling up and down volcanoes until the burnout subsided.
I started in Gran Canaria, riding my bike to every corner, and over every mountain. Every few miles you feel like you’re in a totally different country, with the geology, scenery, and ecosystem seeming totally different. The one consistency wherever I went was deforestation. Everywhere you look the land is scarred, with bare, dry, eroded soil, broken up by a little bush here and the odd tree there. Heading over to Tenerife was a similar story, with certain areas partially reforested, but mostly barren. Some of this is due to lava flow, but most of it is due to logging since pre-colonial times. I looked up the stats and Gran Canaria was down to 35% forest coverage, and Tenerife was down to 20%. There are <a href="https://fundacionforesta.org/">ongoing efforts to reforest</a>, but the status is <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/ecoregions/pa1203">Critical/Endangered</a>.

After the Canary Islands I took the ferry to the south of Spain, and for days I was riding through wine country. That might conjure up a beautiful almost mystical image in your head, but the reality was riding headfirst into brutally strong headwinds, choking on dust, and dodging tumbleweeds.

After spending April riding through the desert in Spain, I headed north through the Pyrenees to Andorra, France, and Germany. I aimed for national parks, areas of outstanding beauty, rivers and generally the greenest bits of the map I could find, but everywhere I went there were way more trees being cut down than being planted. I’d see acres of stumps, then a handful of plastic chutes protecting nowhere near enough saplings. Even the Black Forest was heavily logged, mostly agricultural,  and despite the name there was far more agriculture than forest. It was a similar situation throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein too.
The places you think of as being remote, beautiful and untouched are full of people, cars, trains, hotels, casinos, farmland, and occasional patches of woodland. Even when I tried to avoid towns and get on gravel backcountry trails, deforestation was everywhere.

After two months of seeing the same story over and over, I started thinking about a lot of things, and it got me wondering about my carbon footprint. Living on a bike you’d think my carbon footprint was pretty low, but I did some maths and it was still awful. The average American pumps <a href="https://ourworldindata.org/co2/country/united-states">14.2 tonnes of CO2</a> into the air annually. This is 2,650lb a month, or 87lb a day. In contrast,<a href="https://phil.bike/euro-trip-two-months/"> bike tour life</a> creates 40lb a day from hotels and another 15lb a day from meals (<a href="https://carbonfund.org/how-we-calculate/">source</a>), which is about 1,650lb a month.

Skipping red meat and camping in farmers fields on the weekend meant I got my footprint down to about 1,200lb a month, but I needed a way to offset the rest. That’s when I found out some fellow-Bristolians were on the job: a project called Ecologi! 
I set up a monthly subscription immediately, but I wanted to do more. I’ve done a lot of charity rides in the past, and figured that’s what I needed, a fundraiser page! After a few nags to the Ecologi crew, they added the <a href="https://ecologi.com/gifting">Gift</a> button to profiles. This let me share links to <a href="https://ecologi.com/philsturgeon">my profile</a> and gather donations from anyone, so I got to work telling people about it. When you’re touring around people want to know what you’re doing, and raising awareness for the climate crisis really struck a chord with people.
Donations started to come in from <a href="https://twitter.com/philsturgeon/">Twitter</a>, my <a href="https://phil.bike/trees/">cycling blog</a>, coworkers, family, friends, and even strangers on the road. A truck driver in Bosnia buys me a lemonade? That’s 20 trees. A bike shop in Serbia replaces my shifter cables, cable housing, cleans the whole thing and refuses payment? 200 trees. Sleep in a farmers field in Denmark without the farmer shouting at me? 500 trees. A stranger south of Dublin hosts me for the night, feeds me dinner and pumps me full of Irish cider? 1,000 trees!

I wasn’t running around shaking a collection jar at anyone, people were offering donations. Everyone I spoke to throughout the summer was freaking out about how hot it was. The news was talking about a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48756480">42C heatwave in France</a>, but east Europe was sustaining similar temperatures for weeks at a time. Everyone was scared and confused. 
For many people, 2019 was the year where it became utterly obvious how serious the climate crisis has become. In many developed countries many folks have got away with not noticing, they drive to work with the AC on, sit in a nice office where the AC is cranked up to 11, and go home when the sun is lower in the sky, but less developed countries are being disproportionately devastated by the temperatures. It’s almost impossible to ignore. 
“It’s never normally like this.” 
“I’ve never seen anything like it.” 
“I don’t know how to cool down.” 
“What if every summer is like this one?!”
I met some locals in Croatia walking down the road, surprised by the heatwave who were out of water. All of this confirms this is not just a case of “Phil cycles in a hot place and complains that it was hot”&#8230;
<h2>Motivations for Donations</h2>
The most donations would come in when I was struggling, and I was struggling a lot. Hungary, Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Albania are not ideal places to be when it’s 38-42C every day and you’ve got distance to cover.
I was trying to hit the road early, but even by 9am the temperature was hot enough that I’d be hiding under trees every couple of miles. In Slovakia it was still hot as hell at 11pm, making it <a href="https://phil.bike/euro-trip-slovakia/">too hot to camp in the bivy bag</a>. Doing 40-50mi a day in time to get to the hotel and start remote working was rough. Heat exhaustion was getting me most days for two months, and it elevated to heat stroke twice. I’d get in the sea regularly, not minding the salty feeling because I was covered in salt from my own sweat. I’d be stuck at a border crossing, heat radiating off the tarmac, unable to go anywhere for an hour. I’d hide in the shade of a nearby minivan or car, and now and then the drivers would take pity on me and give me some water, or a little ice coffee.
One day in Hungary it was 42C, and I’d been pushing hard to get through some tree-less shade-less farmland. At one point I was so dizzy and messed up I recognised hyponatremia setting in (losing so much salt you feel drunk) and had to get under a water pump for a while.

Getting donations for being in peril made me push through some situations I probably should have turned away from. Albania almost killed me off, and it was so hot various bike components were melting and others were drying out. I ended up with a serious bout of hyponatremia, and despite being desperate for sleep that night I was attacked by mosquitos in my hotel room so badly for hours that I resorted to setting up my tent in their garden at 3am…

After a few more incidents in Albania I jumped on a ferry to Italy to ride north, but it was just as hot there. I ran out of backup water one day, drank my emergency juicebox, then found myself so desperate for water I pushed through my arachnophobia to blackberry pick in bushes covered in giant spiders.

In Autumn I was riding around cooler climates in Scandinavia, and people following the story online were suddenly drastically less forthcoming with donations. Then an injury put me out of the game for two months. I had to find other ways to fund trees. I sold off an old bike for 5,000 trees and cycled it 300mi from Bristol, England to the new buyer in Paris once my injury was gone. That approach doesn’t scale, but it felt good to be contributing again.
That winter I cycled through floods all over Europe. England, Wales and Ireland all had an uncharacteristic amount of rain, even getting hit by <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/uk-weather-forecast-flood-warnings-tropical-storm-sebastian-wind-rain-a9216766.html">Extra-Tropical Storm Sebastian</a>. I was in Ireland when the storm passed through, and despite being an amazing 46mph tailwind, the rain was horrendous. Huge chunks of the British Isles were devastated from floods.

This got the donations started up again. It seems like peril is the main motivator for people to donate. The effects of the climate crisis are ramping up everywhere and there is no shortage of peril, so this is good for fundraising but terrible and terrifying in every other way. A friend in Portugal just had his house submerged in a “300 year flood”, so I’m going to swing by there and see if I can help the guy out. 
Hopefully enough people will notice how screwed so many things are, elect some people who are dedicated to immediate extreme measures, and efforts can be made to start slowing and eventually reversing this crisis. In the meantime, all I can think about is:

This approach goes beyond conventional farming practices, which often use harmful substances and depletes the land, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, regenerative agriculture creates a more sustainable relationship with the earth, prioritising both environmental health and food production. By using methods that improve soil quality, enhance biodiversity, and enable natural nutrient cycles, regenerative agriculture provides a way to work with nature rather than against it.
At the heart of regenerative agriculture is the idea of improving soil health. Healthy soil serves as one of the planet’s most effective carbon sinks, with the ability to absorb and store vast quantities of CO₂ from the atmosphere. By implementing farming practices that increase the organic matter in the soil, regenerative agriculture helps sequester carbon while simultaneously improving soil fertility and crop yields.
Regenerative agriculture is based on photosynthesis whereby plants absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and convert it into sugars, which fuel their growth. Some of these sugars are released through the plant roots into the soil, where they feed beneficial microorganisms. What is soil organic carbon and its role in carbon removal?
<a href="https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/what-is-soil-organic-carbon-soc/120702/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Soil organic carbon (SOC)</a> is the carbon component found in organic matter within the soil. It is a crucial element in soil health and plays a fundamental role in carbon sequestration. The restoration of degraded soils and the implementation of regenerative agricultural practices have the potential to significantly increase SOC levels, effectively removing CO₂ from the atmosphere.
Healthy soils act as one of the earth’s largest carbon reservoirs, storing more CO₂ than both the atmosphere and vegetation combined. If managed effectively, soils could sequester up to 5 billion tonnes of CO₂ annually (<a href="https://openknowledge.fao.org/items/b05a2539-f9e0-470c-b258-dabfc38dcd0e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FAO, 2021</a>). This makes soil restoration and the management of SOC a critical strategy for addressing climate change.

At COP21 in Paris, where the Paris Agreement was signed, the 4 per 1000 Initiative was also introduced, highlighting soil carbon sequestration as a critical strategy for achieving global climate goals. By enhancing soil health and increasing carbon storage in the ground, regenerative agriculture provides a scalable solution for reducing atmospheric CO₂ and mitigating the impacts of climate change. The <a href="https://4p1000.org/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">4 per 1000 Initiative</a> &#8211; Soils for Food Security and Climate is a global effort launched in 2015 during  COP21 (the Paris Climate Conference) to promote soil health as a key strategy for combating climate change and enhancing food security. The initiative&#8217;s name, &#8220;4 per 1000,&#8221; comes from the concept of increasing the amount of carbon in the world&#8217;s soils by just 
 0.4% per year (or 4 grams per kilogram) could have a significant impact on reducing the rise of atmospheric CO₂.
<h3>Goals and Objectives</h3>
The main objective of the 4 per 1000 Initiative is to increase the global soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks through sustainable agricultural practices. This increase in soil carbon can potentially offset a significant portion of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, stabilising the climate while improving soil fertility. Key goals include:

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Climate Mitigation: Enhance soil carbon sequestration to absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere, reducing the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.</li>

<h3>How It Works</h3>
The 4 per 1000 Initiative encourages countries, farmers, scientists, and stakeholders to adopt agricultural techniques that increase soil carbon content. The idea is that even a small annual increase in soil carbon content (by 0.4%) globally would sequester enough CO₂ to help offset current anthropogenic emissions, particularly from fossil fuels and deforestation.

Why tree-planting isn’t the whole story

With the launch of <a href="https://ecologi.com/solutions/impact-funds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ecologi’s Forests and Landscapes Impact Fund</a>, we are working with our partners to pioneer the next phase of corporate financing for nature restoration.
In this article, we’re going to explain a step-change in our industry’s understanding of how to restore nature: shifting the focus from inputs to outcomes.

<h2>Landscapes in a global context</h2>
At the end of 2023, the <a href="https://www.unep.org/resources/state-finance-nature-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">State of Finance for Nature Report</a> from the UN Environment Programme described just how underfunded nature-based solutions are.
The UNEP report found that $200 billion USD per year is provided to nature-based solutions – a tiny percentage of the $6.7 trillion USD which is provided annually to activities which directly harm nature. In order to meet our climate, biodiversity and restoration targets (as well as reducing nature-harmful financial flows), almost three times this annual amount of nature-positive investment is required by 2030.
As well as scaling-up the financial flows, we must create multifunctional landscapes where people and wildlife can thrive. This method was described in the recently-updated <a href="https://www.undp.org/sites/g/files/zskgke326/files/2023-09/undp-gef-integrated-spatial-planning-workbook-2023-en.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UNDP Integrated Spatial Planning Workbook</a>, to provide implementation guidance in support of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The landscapes we restore will only remain in a healthy state if those living within them are able to exist harmoniously alongside nature.
As such, our approach holds that any restoration projects that the Ecologi community supports must maintain this holistic approach, and generate lasting positive impacts on people and biodiversity, as well as on our climate. 
Any restoration project exists within its own ecological and social landscape, and through working alongside local communities and carefully designing the project activities to be holistic and enduring, the projects we support are much more than just ‘tree-planting programmes’.

<h2>Planting trees is not the whole story</h2>
Nowadays, some of the basic principles of nature restoration are quite widely understood – for example, most prospective funders are aware of the importance of planting locally-native species. But other critical aspects of project design don’t receive the attention they deserve, because funders are often only thinking in ‘per-stem’ terms, about how many trees have been ‘paid for’ and planted. This means there is a risk of private funding being directed to projects that are not necessarily producing the most impactful results for people, biodiversity and the climate. 
Tree-planting plays an important role in successful nature restoration projects. However, there are many other important elements required to run an impactful project – which also require funding. At Ecologi, we have always sought out partners who go beyond tree-planting, incorporating many other environmental and socioeconomic elements to their projects in order to produce the most positive outcomes. 
Whilst historically we have often championed the number of trees funded for planting by the Ecologi community, it would be wrong to think of this as the main (or only) success metric for how successful our projects have been in restoring nature.

Our aim then, is to make other restoration outcomes as well-understood as the number of trees planted. At Ecologi, we’d love to see a world where the public and businesses are able to appreciate and communicate the cascading positive impacts of funding a landscape restoration project which go beyond how many trees have been planted.
Equipped with this more holistic understanding, businesses who want to do good will put their money towards the very best initiatives, and enable us to collectively have a bigger impact on our planet’s future.

<h2>What is landscape restoration?</h2>
Our partners on the ground have been thinking this way the whole time – but the demand-side understanding is very much stuck in the past; if corporate funders are only focused on the input of how many trees they are ‘paying to plant’, then it’s very likely that they are missing out on understanding crucial wider components of effective landscape restoration.
We spoke to each of our long-term restoration partners to gather their thoughts.
<h3>The social aspect</h3>
The level of involvement of local communities in a nature restoration project is among the strongest indicators of project success, because it is local people who will manage the landscape into the long-term future. If we are serious about restoring ecosystems, then we need to root our restoration efforts in the community itself. It is they, their children, and their children’s children who will look after the forest as it grows and returns to health – a process of decades and centuries. 
We also cannot discount the social and economic realities of the communities themselves. The most impactful restoration programmes are those which align the needs and aims of the community with the needs and aims of the ecological restoration activities; otherwise, the structural foundations of the project will always be weak.

Local and Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge is also critical to help sustain a landscape restoration project.
Often, important local historical context is held and shared by local people who have seen the landscape change in their lifetime and have anecdotal evidence passed down through the generations. This knowledge could not be found anywhere else, and it can be instrumental in developing successful outcomes.

To truly understand the impact of a project, we need to look beyond the solitary ‘trees planted’ metric, and seek out a wider set of indicators which include the social, to help us to understand which projects are generating the most positive impact.
<h3>The ecological aspect</h3>
We then need to consider the ecological angle. Ecosystems around the world are in desperate need of restoration and protection. We know how important restoring tree cover is for our climate, but restoring other elements of landscapes is also vitally important for planetary health, biodiversity, and livelihoods.
From rivers and streams that provide us with clean water, to soils where we grow our food, and wetlands that keep carbon locked away, every part of a landscape needs consideration when designing a restoration project. Tree-planting can be an effective way of supporting many elements of a landscape, but it is just one tool we can use – and trees are not the right intervention everywhere.

So when we think about a project area – a polygon on a map which could be hundreds or even thousands of hectares in area – it is very unlikely that a singular intervention like tree-planting is going to be appropriate uniformly across the whole area. The topography could vary in altitude or aspect (slope direction), and different areas within the polygon could have different wind exposure, rain shadows, soil compositions, wildlife grazing patterns, and so on. There might be existing primary forest which needs preservation rather than new saplings planting amongst it. There might be rivers, streams, lakes or peat bogs. There might be people living in the project area – with houses, facilities and roads or pathways which all need to be factored in.

The physical planting of trees can be very cheap. But prioritising high-quality projects that deliver meaningful benefits to the people and wildlife who live there – something Ecologi believes in strongly – comes with other considerations, which cost money.
When our community entrusts funds to Ecologi to support climate action projects, we take our responsibility very seriously and our team works tirelessly to ensure that money is directed towards the most impactful projects, delivered by organisations committed to making a real difference for our planet. It’s not really about ‘paying to plant trees’.

To date, Ecologi has funded over 50 incredible reforestation projects on 3 continents with 11 partners, and what made them truly impactful was that they have always been being delivered holistically. In reality, each of these is much more than ‘tree planting’ projects. That’s why two of our supported partners <a href="https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/press-release/nature-staging-comeback-un-recognizes-seven-world-restoration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were announced as UN World Restoration Flagships</a> in 2024, and one of them <a href="https://earthshotprize.org/winners-finalists/accion-andina/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won the Earthshot Prize</a> in 2023. 
Consequently, we’ve been able to report on incredible benefits brought to local people and wildlife by these projects, from the development of new sustainable income streams enabling local people to send their children to school, to the installation of irrigation systems providing clean drinking water.

<h2>How can my business make a difference?</h2>
