Calculated Carbon Footprint ✅ Set reduction goals ✅ Reduced emissions ✅

The issue

Sustainability has long been a core pillar for Landmark. They were the first in their sector to join the Pledge to Net Zero, committing to greenhouse gas reductions in line with a 1.5°C climate scenario. However, as the business grew, the team realised that achieving these ambitious goals required a more sophisticated, data-led approach to carbon accounting.

The team wanted to move beyond high-level estimates to a granular understanding of their footprint - particularly across Scope 3, which accounts for the vast majority of their emissions. They needed a partner that could offer not just a platform, but also expert support to ensure their reporting was accurate and immune to greenwashing concerns.

The challenges

Calculating a footprint for a large, multi-site group like Landmark is a complex undertaking. The team had previously struggled with a carbon accounting tool that was difficult to navigate and lacked proactive support. The team had to manually build a calculator and input emission factors themselves.

Landmark also faced the challenge of industry inertia. Many of their clients, particularly smaller law firms, found the path to net zero overwhelming and lacked the resources to begin their own carbon journeys. Landmark saw an opportunity to lead by example and provide the tools their partners needed to succeed.

The solution

Partnering with Ecologi provided the clarity and personal support Landmark needed to overhaul its reporting. By migrating to the Ecologi platform, the team was able to establish a new 2023 baseline that offered a much higher level of granularity than previous years.

A critical part of the solution was the dedicated support from the Ecologi team. Rather than being left to navigate a software tool alone, the team worked closely with our dedicated carbon accountant to reframe their baseline and ensure data was categorised correctly across Scopes 1, 2, and 3.

Sally Redman, Net Zero Lead at Landmark, said:

"Working with Ecologi has been a real game-changer for us. Having a dedicated contact for our carbon accounting has been invaluable. I almost feel like they are another member of our team. It has allowed us to reframe our baseline with much better granularity, giving our board confidence that we are working with accurate, comparable data that can drive real reductions."

Landmark has helped launch the Green Badge Initiative, in collaboration with Ecologi, the Bristol Law Society (BLS), and the Devon & Somerset Law Society (DASLS). This community-focused program is designed to help law firms of all sizes begin their journey toward net zero, giving them the tools, knowledge, and support they need to take meaningful climate action.

The program uses a three-tier program to guide law firms:

  1. Tier 1: Make a formal pledge and begin the journey.

  2. Tier 2: Complete a carbon baseline and set reduction goals.

  3. Tier 3: Demonstrate verified emissions reductions over a 12-month period.

This initiative makes sustainability accessible for firms that don't have dedicated ESG teams, providing them with the same high-integrity tools Landmark uses internally.

The results

The shift to a data-led strategy is delivering measurable impact across the group’s entire footprint. Landmark’s most recent data for 2024-25 shows a considerable 42.4% drop in employee commuting emissions - a result of the group’s flexible approach to remote work and a strategic focus on hiring remote talent.

Efficiencies have also led to a 35.4% reduction in operational waste between 2022/23 and 2024/25. Additionally, the group achieved a 24.5% reduction in Scope 2 emissions and a 16.5% drop in Scope 3 emissions in the last year alone.

The Green Badge Initiative is also gaining momentum. Four law firms are already signed up, and the program is expected to reach double figures by the end of the year. Landmark is even exploring the creation of a Nature Restoration Fund, which will allow member law firms to collectively fund Ecologi’s climate action projects.

Looking ahead, Landmark is working with Ecologi to refine their long-term restore strategy, moving toward high-integrity carbon removals to align with the Oxford Principles as they approach their 2030 near-term targets.

"Our goal was to find a partner that offered a full circle solution, from robust accounting to meaningful climate action. The Green Badge initiative is a perfect example of this holistic approach in action. Now we aren't just reducing our own impact, we're empowering our entire legal community to do the same.”

Luke Parsons, Business Development Director at Landmark
