Carbon removal
River Alkalinity Enhancement in Norway
The Kvina River CO₂ Project works by continuously adding a slurry of finely crushed natural alkaline rock into the Kvina River at the Nyland doser. This is an enhanced dosing operation on top of an existing liming programme. The alkaline material reacts with dissolved CO₂ in the river water to form stable bicarbonate ions, which increases the river's dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) load. These bicarbonates are then transported by the river to the ocean, where they provide permanent, safe carbon storage for millennia.
The alkaline substance being added to the Kvina River is a calcite slurry. The product is manufactured in Norway and is composed of powdered limestone, water, and additives. The limestone is primarily high-purity calcite marble (typically 90-95% of the rock), which is sourced from local mines.
Liming is a long-standing effort, as efforts within the region have been ongoing for over 25 years. There is one primary doser for this project (the Nyland doser); however, the project's activities also occur within a watershed that has other dosers from the broader liming programme located in the Little Ana tributary (the Steindor doser). There are also two further inactive, decommissioned dosers.
The Kvina River CO₂ Project supports human health by improving freshwater quality through controlled alkalinity enhancement. By stabilising river pH in a region with a long history of acidification, the project helps protect safe recreational waters and reduces ecological stress that can impact food sources such as freshwater fisheries. The project builds on decades of proven liming practices, ensuring that interventions are well understood, monitored, and safe for surrounding communities.
The project directly contributes to SDG 6 by improving water quality in the Kvina River watershed. Enhanced alkalinity reduces acidification, supports balanced aquatic chemistry, and improves the ecological status of freshwater systems. By integrating carbon removal into an existing liming programme, the project strengthens long-term watershed management while safeguarding freshwater resources that ultimately flow into the marine environment.
The Kvina River CO₂ Project supports sustainable economic activity through the use of locally sourced limestone, Norwegian manufacturing, and ongoing operation and monitoring of dosing infrastructure.
The project delivers durable climate mitigation by converting dissolved CO₂ into stable bicarbonate ions that are transported to the ocean and stored safely for millennia. By accelerating natural geochemical processes, the Kvina River CO₂ Project provides verifiable, long-term carbon dioxide removal.
The project supports marine ecosystems by increasing alkalinity delivered to the ocean, helping counteract ocean acidification and improve conditions for marine life. By enhancing the natural carbon buffering capacity of seawater, the project contributes to healthier coastal and marine environments. The controlled use of calcite slurry and long-standing experience with liming practices ensure environmental safety while delivering benefits to both freshwater and marine biodiversity.
