Reforestation

Restoring forests in Nepal - Golche/Kipche

Project background

Eden launched its Nepal Reforestation initiative in 2015 to support local communities and restore vital forest ecosystems. The Golche project, covering 1,397 hectares, was introduced in 2022 as part of this effort.

Why support?

Deforestation has substantial and widespread negative impacts on climate, hydrology, soils and biodiversity, with consequent impacts on societies and economies. Deforestation is a key concern in Nepal driven by the illegal harvesting of forest products, unsustainable practices, dependency on forest resources, along with forest fires.  The degradation of these ecosystems has significant impacts in the region such as the loss of species native to the area, threat of flooding and loss of resources for communities who rely heavily on the forests. Restoration projects are therefore essential in helping to recover critical habitats, maintaining healthy forests and supporting local communities.

Benefits

The planting of 447,758 trees will play a vital role in combating climate change by acting as carbon sinks, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Protecting their health and preserving them is essential for making meaningful progress toward global net-zero goals. This project helps prevent deforestation while also restoring degraded land through increased tree planting and coverage.

How do we rate this project?

This project was designed to bring meaningful benefits to local communities and nature, and therefore contributes towards a range of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

This project has provided employment opportunities for members of the local community, providing fair wages for those helping to restore the forest.

Wages from the project help individuals to provide their families with a greater quantity of more nutritious food.

This project is contributing towards the fight against climate change by restoring an important carbon sink.

Many species call the forests home, including endangered species. Protecting and restoring these forests supports their survival.
