Carbon removal
Kuamut Rainforest
The Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project in Sabah, Malaysia, protects and restores 83,381 hectares of tropical forest within a long-term concession managed by Yayasan Sabah, a state-owned foundation dedicated to improving the lives of Malaysians in the region. Once designated as a production forest and heavily logged, this area was set for continued commercial exploitation. Through the project’s intervention, more than 84,000 hectares of logging will be avoided over 30 years, preventing an estimated 16 million tCO₂e emissions from being released. Beyond its climate impact, Kuamut safeguards a richly biodiverse habitat home to elephants, banteng, orangutans, and endangered bird species such as the Helmeted Hornbill, Bornean Peacock Pheasant, and Storm’s Stork.
The project creates opportunities for women’s involvement in conservation activities and forest management.
Provides local employment in forest protection and management, generating income in an area with limited economic alternatives.
Actively engages marginalised groups in project activities, helping to reduce economic and social inequalities.
Without the project, an estimated 16 million tCO₂e would have been released over 30 years. Instead, the forest is now protected and managed as a long-term carbon sink, demonstrating both credibility and impact in its climate contribution.
Protects and restores biodiverse rainforest habitats, safeguarding elephants, banteng, orangutans, and endangered bird species like the Helmeted Hornbill and Storm’s Stork.
