Waste-to-biochar project turning organic residues into high-carbon soil and climate benefits.

Thermal decomposition of biomass in an oxygen-depleted atmosphere (pyrolysis) produces bio-oil, syngas and char. Biochar, the stable carbon-rich char, can be applied to soils to improve fertility and sequester carbon long-term, contributing to climate change mitigation. Located in South East Queensland, Australia, the project converts organic waste, macadamia, pecan, and walnut shells, along with used pine pallets, into high-quality biochar using Pyrocal’s CCT systems. These materials, which would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated, yield 250–270 kg of biochar per metric ton of feedstock, with carbon contents ranging from 81–88%. The resulting biochar is sold as a soil amendment and livestock feed additive, ensuring 100% of the feedstock is diverted from waste disposal.

Boosting crops and capturing carbon with enhanced rock weathering in Canada

Ecologi is currently supporting UNDO’s Canadian projects, which focuses on engaging with farming communities to remove megatonnes of carbon alongside socio-economic benefits. The project partners with Canadian Wollastonite, who specialise in the mining and crushing of the fast-weathering mineral, wollastonite.   Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) accelerates the natural weathering of silicate minerals by applying crushed silicate rocks such as basalt, olivine, and wollastonite to the soil. Wollastonite is a highly effective mineral for ERW as a carbon capture method. It absorbs CO₂ much faster than other silicate rocks, requires less material per ton of CO₂ stored, and can be reapplied to land annually.  Wollastonite has a wealth of co-benefits for farmers and their land. When the rock weathers, it releases calcium, magnesium, and silicon, as well as other major and minor nutrients into the soil. This results in higher crop yields, increased pest resistance, and improvement in the pH of soils. The crushed rock can be spread on any type of cropland, and reduces the need for CO2-emitting lime inputs in fields.
