Protecting and conserving rainforests
Why support rainforest protection?
Tropical forests are biodiversity hotspots, providing habitat for half of the global species population and 80% of terrestrial wildlife.
Rainforests exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen, recycle rainwater, and cool the climate, supporting life as we know it across the planet. It will be impossible to curb global warming without saving tropical forests. If deforestation were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the United States.
Millions of Indigenous people also depend on forests for their survival, and the livelihoods of over a billion people rely on rainforest resources.
An acre of rainforest is destroyed every 3 seconds — that’s an area of forest the size of Bristol wiped out every day.
Tropical deforestation is responsible for up to 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions, which drive climate change, and is also the primary cause of biodiversity loss. A million species are at risk of extinction this century, each unique and irreplaceable.
That’s why we’ve chosen to take action to save the planet’s tropical forests, preserve the lungs of the planet and allow nature to thrive.
Project timeline
1 Jan 2025
Rainforest Trust has protected or is in the process of protecting 125 million acres, including seven percent of all currently unprotected high integrity tropical and subtropical forests, permanently locking up 15 billion tonnes of carbon.
8 Dec 1988
Rainforest Trust is founded and begins protecting rainforests. 99% of all the rainforest Rainforest Trust has worked to protect so far is still intact, showing that their approach is incredibly effective.
How do we rate this project?
We're supporting Rainforest Trust's work through their Rainforest Climate Action Fund. This fund enables us to contribute to Rainforest Trust’s highest-priority climate projects across several different countries, so our funding will go where it is most needed. This means we can have the biggest possible positive impact on rainforests globally, and bring benefits to nature, people and our climate.
This project is supporting progress towards this goal through ensuring Indigenous and local ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, and natural resources, as well as building the resilience of reducing their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events.
This project is supporting progress towards this goal through ensuring secure and equal access to land for Indigenous peoples, and creating opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.
This project is contributing towards this goal through reducing the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination.
This project is supporting progress towards this goal by reducing water pollution, increasing the supply of freshwater, protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems including forests, wetlands, and rivers, and strengthening the participation of local communities in improving water management.
This project is contributing towards this goal by promoting sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.
This project is supporting progress towards this goal by protecting and safeguarding the world’s cultural and natural heritage, reducing deaths from water-related disasters, supporting positive economic, social and environmental links between urban and rural areas, and supporting the adoption of climate mitigation and adaptation policies within human settlements.
This project is contributing towards this goal by promoting the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources, and enabling the people they work with to have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.
This project is supporting progress towards this goal by strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters, and improving education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
This project is supporting progress towards this goal by reducing marine pollution, sustainably managing and protecting coastal ecosystems, and reducing overfishing.
This project is contributing towards this goal by conserving terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, promoting the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, combatting desertification, conserving biodiversity, reducing the degradation of natural habitats, and preventing poaching and trafficking of flora and fauna.
This project is supporting progress towards this goal by mobilising financial resources for developing countries, and enhancing international support for capacity-building in developing countries.
