Reforestation

One Acre Fund Project in Kenya

Trees help restore soil, stabilise yields, and give families a long-term financial buffer, while also supporting climate mitigation when grown at scale. Over nearly two decades, One Acre Fund has helped farmers plant more than 350 million trees across Africa and is now working toward an ambitious goal of one billion trees by 2030. Kenya, where environmental degradation and climate pressures are particularly severe, remains the core driver of this expansion.

In partnership with Ecologi, this project will support the planting of 810,000 trees in Kenya. The initiative provides farmers with high-quality, locally appropriate seedlings along with hands-on training on planting techniques and long-term care. By integrating trees directly into their croplands, participating families will restore soil health, increase yields, and build long-term resilience while contributing to climate mitigation and the regeneration of Kenya’s rural landscapes.

Benefits

Planting 810,000 trees strengthens climate resilience across some of Kenya’s most affected farming regions. As the trees grow, they sequester carbon and reduce pressure on natural forests by offering farm-grown alternatives for timber and fuel. Their presence in agricultural fields also helps buffer crops from the effects of climate change (drought, heat stress, and erratic rainfall), making smallholder farms more resilient over time. In a region where climate volatility increasingly threatens livelihoods, these trees serve as a long-term natural defence system.

Through One Acre Fund’s training and follow-up support, farmers gain practical skills in agroforestry and climate-smart agriculture, empowering communities with knowledge that will continue to support them for generations.

For smallholder families, trees provide both immediate and long-term benefits. Improved soil health and microclimates result in higher and more reliable crop yields, thereby strengthening household food security and income.
