Tackling climate change takes collective action. COP27 is a reminder that it’s never been more important for businesses to come together to tackle the crisis. 
As the world’s leaders meet to discuss the climate crisis at COP27, it’s important to remember that businesses are just as important as politicians (if not more) when it comes to taking action. We’ve put this blog together to recap on what COP is all about and offer practical ideas on what your business can do to be part of the solution.

COP is the main decision-making body of the <a href="https://unfccc.int/">United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change</a> (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC is an agreement between 197 UN Parties to stabilise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at a level that would limit dangerous disturbance of our climate. 
The COP summit happens every year, and it’s where the decision-making body assesses the effects of UN measures to limit climate change. It was at COP21 in 2015 that the Paris Agreement (the legally binding treaty on climate change) was adopted. 
This year’s <a href="https://unfccc.int/cop27">COP27</a> will be held in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt from 6 – 18 November 2022. Each day at COP is dedicated to a different theme, and based on these themes delegates and leaders from around the world produce formal commitments to limit global warming.

Businesses have a big role to play in tackling climate change. The commercial sector alone makes up <a href="https://ourworldindata.org/emissions-by-sector">6.6% of global GHG emissions</a>. This is largely due to the energy that’s used in buildings, warehouses, offices and supply chains. The root of the problem is the fossil fuels that are burned to create energy to power this sector.
The best thing that your business can do to limit global warming is to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Without a global reduction in GHGs, and if we all stick to our current policies,  scientists  project about <a href="https://climateactiontracker.org/global/temperatures/">2.7°C warming above pre-industrial levels</a> (significantly higher than the UN’s 1.5ºC target). 
By immediately decarbonising your business processes, supply chain and assets (such as <a href="https://climateactiontracker.org/publications/decarbonising-buildings-achieving-net-zero-carbon-heating-and-cooling/">buildings and offices</a>), you can have a profoundly positive impact on the planet. It’s crucial to commit to net-zero emissions in your industry. The Science-Based Target Initiative recommends a reduction of at least 90% of business emissions (scopes 1, 2, 3) to align with the 1.5ºC ambition.
